DIY Slip Covered Ottoman & Freezer Paper Stencils {it's a double post!}

I finally found freezer paper at my local Fry's while grocery shopping the other day, I was so excited! More on that in a minute though.

While I'm in the midst of finishing up Corbyn's room remodel {still a few more accessories & wall art to finish} I decided today that I should be productive and make one project for his room. He has a small desk that I made a couple years ago. I used an Ikea stainless steel cabinet door front that was in the clearance section for like $4, and some clearance legs that I also found at Ikea for $2 a piece. The legs match his other furniture perfect. And just buy adding the legs it was an instant little desk that is perfect for this little guy. And not to mention super easy to clean since the stainless just wipes clean. When I made the desk I found these perfect little cube ottomans from Ross that are 12 x 12" and fit under it perfectly. Since they are tan from his old room I knew I needed to slip cover them. Luckily I had bought some black canvas curtains from Goodwill several months ago that I decided not to use in his room. It's the perfect material for this project.

How to make a DIY Slip Covered Ottoman -

Start with the old ottoman. These are small ones, but this same thing can be done to any ottoman.

Measure all 4 sides of the ottoman, and then measure the top. Now cut all the pieces out of your new fabric. Luckily the curtain I used was hemmed on both sides so I used the hem for the bottom of my slipcover so I didn't have to sew one.

Pin the right sides together making sure to match up the hemmed edges at the bottom so they are even. Sew one seam at a time. When your done with one, just add another piece of the fabric to the next edge to sew. Your basically making a big long strip of fabric. When you sew all 4 pieces together you will have a square.

Now just sew on your top piece from the inside obviously, and your done. You can tell in my pictures I didn't use the iron...but be my guest!

How to use Freezer Paper to stencil your fabric -

You need freezer paper! Completely different from wax paper {so I've learned this past week}. The freezer paper has a shiny side like the picture below, and the other side is almost like a white paper.

First you need to print off or draw out your design. I chose to print a skull template.

You will need to place your printout under the freezer paper {it will show through to trace} and trace your design.

Once you have completely traced the design or drawn your own, you will need your craft knife to start cutting out the design. Be sure to save pieces that are like my eyes and nose cavity pieces.

Now on a dry warm setting iron the design on to the fabric, just make sure you get it really good around the edges. Then get your fabric paint, tulips "soft" fabric paint is best for this. And paint it on. You need to let it dry for a couple hours before removing the stencil.

And your done. Some things need to be set, just read the directions for your fabric paint.

The Oscars {Best & Worst} Dressed according to me

I usually don't watch the entire Oscar show, but this year for some reason I did. I was really rooting for Octavia Spencer to win for The Help and she did, well deserved. I will admit that Moneyball and The Help are the only two movies I've seen of those nominated, but some of the others are definitely on my "to watch" list. Now for the knitty gritty...Best & Worst Dressed!

First off can I just say that while these two make an extremely good looking couple, Angelina needs to eat a plate of Nachos, followed by about 10 cheeseburgers. Get some meat on those bones girl! Not a lot but some. They always look good though, so well done on the clothing.

Angelina Jolie & Brad Pitt

Gwyneth Paltrow

Love the white. The cape...eh not so much, but she really does pull it off and looks stunning and beautiful. Not to mention the dress looks lovely without the cape and her simple hair, and accessories.

Michelle Williams

Ah Michelle Williams! Can she be anymore perfect?!? From her pixie cut to the coral dress, it's perfection. I love the little bow adorning her dress. She always knows how to wear a great look. By far my favorite of the night.

Cameron Diaz

I loved this dress on Cameron, especially while standing next to Jennifer Lopez while presenting. The color on her skin was fresh. And she looked really beautiful.

Emma Stone

Now I think this dress looks great on Emma Stone, personally I wouldn't ever do the big bow around my neck. She definitely pulls it off well though, it reminded me a little of the Nicole Kidman look a couple years back..but it still looks great.

Octavia Spencer

Kuddo's to a plus size girl finding a dress that is flattering and classy. She looks amazing. The beading detail on this dress really slims her in the middle and is so flattering on her body. Although I think she could have definitely gone sleeveless, but none the less still a great choice for her.

Jennifer Lopez

I love Jennifer Lopez, and I always think she's gorgeous. I liked her dress, a little 70's throw back, I wish it didn't have the long sleeves. The dress is lovely still and fits her beautifully. I wasn't fond of her hair, I don't know why...just didn't like it.

Tina Fey

Great dress, great color...she looked amazing. And her hair was better than Jennifer Lopez's I think.

Jonah Hill

I had to pick a guy! And I don't know what it is but I think Jonah Hill looked dashing in his all black get up. He's looking so nice all slimmed down and dressed up.

Ellie Kemper

While I love her, I do not love this dress. It reminds me of a bazillion pennies glued on a dress. And it's a shame that the dress is the same color as her hair {cause her hair is such an amazing color, but the two shouldn't match}.

Busy Phillips

Oh goodness, where do I start? The dress isn't horrible, but it didn't scream Oscars to me. And then pair it with the hot pink shoe, and the crazy earrings! Not a winning look.

Meryl Streep

I'm so glad she won. And I'm fully aware that she has her style all figured out, but with that said I do not like this at all. It's the gold, if it was a different color I don't think I would have minded it as much. I think a bold color like red or cobalt, even black would have made this dress better.

Livia Giuggiola

Everything about this dress screams awful to me. Long sleeves, the ruffle on the chest, the full skirt. Just not a great look, very outdated looking to me.

Melissa McCarthy

Okay I love this girl, she cracks me up. And while I love the color of this blush dress, I don't love the sleeves. I think she should have forgotten the sleeves and the dress should have come up to be a sleeveless dress with that high jeweled collar and waist it would have looked lovely and very Grecian. Other than that she looks lovely. Which I feel bad cause I'm plus size and I'm sure it's so incredibly hard to find stunning Oscar worthy dresses.

Wouldn't it be nice every once in a while if we all got to play dress up like that!

1 Hour Throw Pillow Makeover

{I apologize for my pictures, I still have much to learn in lighting and editing photo's!}

A few years back we were blessed with my mom's Lazyboy sectional {so comfortable}, and we love it. It's starting to show signs of wear which I will have to address in the near future. The color wouldn't be what I would have picked, but it's not completely terrible either. It's a cranberry color, so it's a little hard to find throw pillows to match. A while ago I bought some chocolate brown pillows, plain and simple...nothing fancy. The pillows have lost their life and fluffiness, and the brown is just way to dark. Like I've said before everything in my house is brown. I'm trying to change that little by little by brightening my accessories up. I like my tan walls {with 2 boys they don't show the dirt!} I would love to do something bright and bold, but the couch's color is so limiting.

{the old pillows, blah...I know! But hey, they were $5 a piece at Ross!}

A few weeks back I came across some cream linen type upholstery fabric at Goodwill for $2.99. There was more than enough to re-cover my 4 - 18" x 18" throw pillows, and I still have some left over for another project. And the fabric was new! This fabric was probably close to $15+ a yard new...so that was a major score!

So I took the existing throw pillows, threw in some new stuffing by ripping the seam open and sewing it closed again. By using the existing pillows I saved a ton of $$$ MONEY $$$ instead of having to buy pillow forms. I then cut all the fabric to 18 x 18" squares, pinned them inside out (right sides together), sewed them (leaving a 12" opening on one side to put the pillow inside). Once I got all the pillows stuffed into the new cases, I pinned the opening shut and then sewed them. Viola! New pillows for the cost of the $2.99 fabric, and a big bag of polyfill stuffing that I already had laying around. The best part is, if I get sick of the fabric I just have to use a seem ripper and take off the covers and still have the pillows to re-cover again.

They definitely pop on the couch and brighten it up, we'll see how they hold up to the boys since they are such a light color. I think I will be making some smaller rectangle pillows to go along with them, I just need to find some good fabric.

St. Patty's Day Felt Clover Wreath

Okay...so I wasn't originally going to make anything for St. Patty's Day to hang on the front door, I was going to skip right to the spring wreath. Then while trying to decide on what I should have my spring wreath look like, I just decided to be frugal and throw something together that was {FREE} and would serve the purpose for the next month until I gather my thoughts and come up with a spring wreath I want to make. So I pulled out my trusty felt {FREE}, and some cardboard {FREE, luckily I got a package today while I was hunting all over the house for some cardboard to use...can you say perfect timing!} I saw this cute little number the other day and posted it on my post a couple days ago...

@ Spare Time Sanity

So I decided to go ahead and do this for the front door since it was all stuff I had, or could work with and get it done today. Here's what I did...

Supplies:

* Cardboard

* Glue Gun

* Felt

* Box Cutter or cutting tool

* Scissors

Start by making a heart on your cardboard {you'll need 3 hearts total, so cut the first one and use it as a stencil for the other 2 hearts so they are all the same.} I cut the centers out of each heart too. Then cut a stem out of cardboard. Then glue all 3 hearts to the stem.

Now sit down, grab your scissors and felt...and get cutting. If your so lucky to have a cutter that allows you to cut circle felt pieces I envy you! If your not that lucky start cutting circles. Lot's of circles. My circles were about 2" in diameter. You can make your wreath as big as you want it, so I don't know how many circles to tell you to cut. You may just have to cut a bunch, glue, and see as you go.

Once you've got the circles cut, put a dot of glue in the center of a felt circle. Then fold it in half. Now put another dot of glue in the center of the half moon shape and fold in half again. It should look like the pictures below.

Then start gluing these little pieces to your cardboard. I started on the outside edge and went around each section. Then filled in all the empty space. You continue this until all 3 hearts are full. I just covered the stem in flat felt, you can do whatever you'd like.

This is the perfect {FREE}, cute addition to the front door until St. Patty's Day. Can I just say...that I LOVE felt! What on earth would we do without it, it's amazing for quick inexpensive projects.

My apologies! I was under the impression that Freezer Paper and Wax Paper were one in the same, which apparently they are not. Freezer Paper is only waxy on one side, while Wax Paper has it on both sides. You want Freezer Paper for these projects as seen in one of my recent posts on working with Freezer Paper & Wax Paper seen HERE. I know I have been unlucky to find Freezer Paper in my local stores, that's why I assumed they were the same thing. You can apparently purchase it online. Which I will most likely be doing! Sorry again for the confusion!

~~Yes freezer paper and wax paper are the same thing!~~ I stand corrected, they indeed are not the same thing...my apologies! Freezer paper has wax on only one side, while wax paper is waxy on both sides. See HERE. And yes they serve another purpose than just wrapping up food (or whatever it's used for). I honestly only use it for painting wood items on so they don't stick. I have had some friends inquiring about using it to make t-shirt transfers or stencils out of it. I told them I hadn't attempted it yet, but had read about it. So I decided to do a post with some cute ideas using freezer paper. It's not just good for stencils and transfers, you can make cute decorations out of it too.

I think I will most definitely be playing with some freezer paper crafts in the near future. Possibly stenciling some t-shirts for sure.

The Hunger Games are upon us!

I have to admit something to you all! I indeed had not read but maybe 2 books since High School {15 years ago...oh my goodness...I can't believe it's been that long since High School} up until last year! I know {insert giant gasp here} I had no excuse before kids other than the fact that I was working 50+ hours as a restaurant manager, and didn't like reading very much. Then when kids came along the thought of reading alone was exhausting, and every time I tried to start a book it would be at bed time and just put me to sleep. {Please tell me I'm not alone}

Then about a year after the first Twilight movie came out I actually saw it, and fell in love with the story...I became a FAN! Last year I actually checked the books out from the library and READ for the first time in years, and LOVED it! I became enamored with these incredible books. So when I had finished reading them I was sad, I needed something good to read. All my friends kept saying "The Hunger Games". So I jumped on that band wagon. Thank goodness I did. I just finished reading the first book of the 3 part series a little over a week ago and went out immediately to buy the second book. These books are just as good as the Twilight Saga, dare I say maybe even better. If you haven't read this series yet...I highly encourage you to get them now! The first movie will be coming out the end of March, and it looks wonderful already. I even got my Mom to read the first book, which she was a little ho-hum about the idea of reading it at first..then finished in it 2 days! She loves to read! She's hooked to the series!

So since my friends and I are the crazy people who go at midnight of the movie's premiere we are also having a "Hunger Games T-shirt Party". Making special shirts for that premiere night at the movies.

So I thought I would give you guys some ideas you could hand make if your planning on making your own shirts for the movie.

Well today is the day of LOVE! I sincerely hope you all have someone special to share your LOVE with today. Whether it's your spouse, someone your in a relationship with, your children, your family, or a close friend. Yes this holiday is one directed at the consumers to purchase gifts to show their LOVE to another person...but take a moment today to think about those whom you truly LOVE and what makes you LOVE them. And maybe share those things with them. That will probably mean more to them than any gift.

I LOVE how he takes care of our family, and the silly little things he does to show us how much he loves me and our boys...like when he makes little veggie platters for snack and turns them into veggie robots or a pretty flower pattern, it makes me giggle and makes us feel special. I LOVE that he invests so much time in to our boys and for that I LOVE my husband!

I really LOVE my boys! I LOVE that Corbyn is brilliant enough to see a pile of garbage and see's a vision and turns it into an invention. I LOVE that he has the biggest heart, and that he cares for others...most of the time putting their need first. And I especially LOVE that he will still snuggle with me, and will pay be compliments like telling me how beautiful I am. I LOVE Kaison because that kid can make me laugh daily! I LOVE that he pretend plays. And I really LOVE that he tells me I'm his best friend.

I LOVE my Mom because she is always there for me! I LOVE that she gets my jokes and we always have a good laugh. I LOVE that no matter what ridiculous question I have for her, she'll still answer it the best she knows how...even if I've asked the same question 100 times because I always forget the answer.

I LOVE my Grandma...I LOVE that she tells me I'm such a good little Las! I LOVE that every time we say goodbye to her she says "A Bushel & A Peck, and A Hug Around The Neck". And I LOVE that at 93 years old she gets to be a part of my boys life every week, and they have a great relationship with her.

I LOVE my Brother Josh. He's my computer genius and rescues me every time I have no clue when I have an electronic crisis, I LOVE that he's super smart and knows how to do that stuff. I LOVE that he helps me with anything if I ask him to! I LOVE that even though we tend to annoy each other at times...he would be there for me ANYTIME I need him! And I especially LOVE that my boys LOVE their Uncle Josh-y and that he will sit and build Legos with them whenever they want.

I LOVE my Sister-In-Law Heather, she's awesome! I LOVE that she teaches me crazy coupon tricks I would otherwise be completely frustrated with. I LOVE that God brought her to my brother and to our family. And I really just LOVE her, plain and simple. And that my boys are crazy about her.

So I hope today is filled with LOVE and sweetness for all of you!

DIY Camera Strap Cover with Lense Cap Pocket

Yes there are a million tutorials on making a Camera Strap Cover, but I am showing you how to do it anyway! I've been wanting to make one for a while now, especially since getting my camera. I finally got off my bootie and did it. I made it to match my new DIY Camera Bag Purse {see tutorial for that HERE}. I have to say that I'm super proud of myself, and my sewing! Trust me, this is a huge accomplishment for me. I'm only good at sewing straight lines and couldn't even tell you how to use a pattern. So between the camera bag and this camera strap I feel super proud of myself. Now it's your turn to make one.

Supplies:

* Fabric

{1 for the main strap, 1 contrasting for the pocket}

* Thread & Sewing Machine
* Heavy Weight Fusible Fleece

{I used Pellon from Joanns, and used a coupon}

* Fusible Interfacing

{doesn't matter what kind}

* Scissors
* Rotary cutter/mat

{optional but suggested}

* Iron

Just A Note: I made these covers to fit the standard sized straps that come with any Canon-Nikon DSLR/SLRs. The finished length of the strap is 24.5" by 2.75" wide.

These are the measurements you will need to cut your fabric:

Fabric: {2} 26.5 x 3.75" [1 piece for front of strap and 1 for back]
Pocket Piece: {1} 5.5 x 3.75" [I used a contrasting fabric]
Interfacing: 3.5 x 2.75" [you can layer 2 pieces if your interfacing is lightweight]
Fusible Fleece: 24.5 x 5.5"

Let's Begin!

Put your {2} pieces of fabric [one for front of strap and one for the back] that measure 26.5 x 3.75", aside and let's work on the pocket. Take your fusible interfacing and center it on the back of the pocket piece and fuse. Now fold the short end over 1/2" and then fold it again to create a finished edge for the top of the pocket. I stitched this using a double row of stitching. Line up the unfinished edge of your pocket piece with the end of your strap piece and pin.

Now lay your two long strap pieces [26.5" x 3.75"] together, your pocket piece should be sandwiched in the middle and everything should be lined up. Sew a 1/2" seam allowance all along the edge. Take your iron and press the seam open.

Take your piece of fusible fleece and lay it centered on the wrong side of your fabric. It will probably have a 1/2" excess of fabric on each long side, and 1" excess of fabric on each short end. Iron it. After ironing the fleece fold each short end 1/2" and then 1/2" again to create clean edges and iron them.

Go stitch the short seams across now. I did a double stitch again here.

Now is the time for you to add any special trims or ruffles like I did if you so choose. Sew it to the side that doesn't have the pocket.

Match the edges together inside out again and sew a 1/2" seam allowance. Trim off excess leaving about 1/4" seam allowance. Now have fun and try to turn it inside out. Sometimes a pencil's eraser helps! Get your iron again and press your camera strap flat.

Sew another double stitch down each side of the strap, do not sew the pocket though...stop just before it. And your done! You now have an amazing camera strap cover!

Note: My strap I think could have been longer. I only say that because I'm a larger girl {wink}, so I like my camera strap longer, next time I may add a few more inches to the length of the strap cover. I also just added some piping and a ruffled fabric trim down the middle. I originally wanted the piping to be down the sides of the strap like piping should be, but I totally forgot to sew it on there. Duh! Next time I will remember, I think it will give it a pop of color and a nice polished edge.

About 5 years ago I was looking for a nice headboard on Craigslist and came across a black wrought iron headboard & footboard that has sleigh style wood accents on the corners of both the headboard & footboard. I fell in love with them, especially since they only cost $30. Well now I'm not so in love with them. I really want something a little more clean. I'm leaning more towards an old door with some crown molding added to the top for a decorative finish, or old shutters...but I'm not positive yet. I thought it would be great to get ideas for some not so traditional style headboards.

DIY Camera Bag Tutorial - I made my OWN!

So after my post yesterday on everyone else's camera bag I felt the need to get busy on my own. And just because I felt like it, I am giving you a tutorial too. Mine may differ a bit from some of the ones yesterday, but I just kind of made it up as I went and it turned out pretty good I think. So find a tutorial that works for you, or use mine, or make yours up as you go too!

What you need:

* Fabric

(I'm not going to lie I didn't measure, but if I had to guess you'll need at least a half of a yard or a little more...in case you want a matching camera strap!)

* Scissors

* Glue Gun

* Sewing Machine & Thread

* Pins

* High Density Foam

(Mine was about 1" thick, I bought it at Walmart 2 big squares for $6. But I'd go to your local fabric store and get it, probably cheaper and you could even get something a little thinner if you wanted.)

* Velcro

Let's Start!

First I measured the inside of my bag. Bottom first. I cut a piece of foam to fit. Then I just figured out how tall the side pieces needed to be and cut them too. They were a little bigger than the bottom piece (seen in middle here). I used scissors to cut this foam.

Next I placed them out on my fabric, my fabric is folded here. I spaced them out evenly, taking into account that I'm going to sew three pockets for the foam to slide into. And that once the foam is in I will be folding it up almost in a box shape. So I left about a 1 1/2" gap between the foam pieces. I just marked with a marker the center of all these gaps so I knew where to sew my pocket lines.

Now I turned the fabric inside out and sew all three edges. The top and sides. Leaving the bottom open.

Turn in right side out and lay it flat.

No need to iron, but if you want be my guest.

Now I sewed the seams where I marked with my marker earlier, creating 3 pockets for the foam to fit into. My pockets definitely had some extra room so I went back and tightened it up a bit so it fit more snugly.

So shove your foam in now.

Now I wrap the open seem like a present.

Plug your glue gun in now, you'll need it in a minute.

Start by tucking in your corners.

Now fold your seam over and pin it. I stitched this part all the way across to make it easier. There was still about an extra 1" of fabric in excess that we will be folding over to create a clean seam that we will glue next. Make sense?

Get your glue gun and glue your seem creating a clean no fringe seam. You could sew this by hand to if you wanted. I just wanted it to be a snug fit and clean so I chose the glue gun...the easy way.

Here you can see my gaps between foam pieces where I sewed extra seams to make it fit snug.

When your done with this part go cut smaller pieces of foam to create your dividers depending on your camera needs and parts and repeat the above process and cover them. This is what it will look like when your done!

I added Velcro to the top corners of mine since my bag made it come to a v shape anyway, just to hold it together and make it look clean.

This is it opened flat, I ran out of Velcro for my second foam divider so it's missing some here.

Here are the dividers. You just hot glue Velcro down the sides that will sit against the walls of the foam insert. Glue to coordinating piece of Velcro to the inside of the insert as well where you want your dividers to sit. You could do multiple spots of Velcro on the insert if you want to be able to move your dividers in different ways to fit different things.

I may add another divider later for smaller things. My this bag has enough little pockets for all my memory cards, and charger, etc...

I hope this works for you. I'm pretty proud of myself for doing this so project and not having to use a ruler once. It came out pretty awesome I think. And it's a cute bag for my camera now! Eeeek! So excited. Can't wait to try this again on another bag.

How many of you want a super cute camera bag? How many of you have purchased a fancy camera tote or bag, you know the nice feminine ones that look like super cute purses? They are so amazing...but I'm going to be honest with you. I can't afford one! See I have an allowance and even though it's fairly decent...I like to shop and can't see spending my whole allowance on one bag. So I have been on the hunt for the past couple months for the right bag to do a little camera bag DIY to. Goodwill has given me nothing to work with...well unless I want a lime green or obnoxious looking purse...which I do not! And then all of the sudden last night I totally remembered I have this bag!

It's the perfect size bag to turn into a camera bag. I don't use it anymore and it's in fantastic shape. Has pockets, etc... And even though it's not a super fun color on the outside like some of the cute camera totes you can buy, it's black and will always look cute. Plus the inside is a crazy pop of fabric to make me happy when I peak inside. And it's perfect until I find something better to make another one! So this will be one of my projects. Turn this beauty into an awesome camera tote. I'm so excited.

Tips for finding that perfect purse to
convert into a camera bag:
* Purse must have a nice flat bottom
* It's nice if it has at least a couple pockets on the outside for extra stuff
* Be sure the straps are long enough for you to comfortably carry it around

Today I have to take a moment to say a huge Happy Birthday to the best Momma in the whole wide world! My Mom...Lauretta. She was a precious gift to say the least to her Momma when she was born. And over the past some odd years (I will be nice and not say her age in case she doesn't want everyone to know..wink!) so many people have been blessed by her. I thought it only appropriate that on her birthday she be celebrated for all the wonderful things that make her incredible.

{By the way check out this adorable picture I found of her! Isn't she so pretty?!? She'll probably be upset that I posted this, but who cares it's to darn cute not to!}

{This is her & I....one of my favorite pictures of us. Although we don't have a lot of pictures together, or at least ones she wouldn't mind me posting..hope she doesn't mind this one since I've posted it before anyway!}

Here is what sets this incredible lady apart from so many...

First of all she loves God with all her heart, she has for many years. She has taken that faith and been obedient applying God's will to her life, and his word...standing firm in what she believes and teaching God's grace to others. This woman can preach the word of God, let me tell you! And trust me it's the good kind of preaching, not that boring stuff either!

She joined the army at 18, met a boy...got married...had two AMAZING kids...and when he left, she raised those two kids by herself. Giving it all she had, even when I'm sure she thought she didnt' have much left to give...she never failed those two kids...never once! Always providing and meeting needs, putting herself through nursing school to be sure she could give them the very best. And she did, she always gave them the very best.

When her first child decided to drop out of college (ah..hem) after just two weeks of school, did she judge or make a huge argument?! Nope. She lovingly just said...then you will work. And that's exactly what that girl did. Then when her second child decided to follow in the first child's footsteps and not continue school, again she just lovingly said okay, but you'll need to work. She loved them unconditionally! She did that through every mistake or poor judgment those kids made. Teaching them through it all, instilling strong work ethics.

Then when her first born decided to get married, even though she didn't really know this fella...she lovingly stood beside her and gave her blessing...accepting that fella as her son and loving him more than he could have imagined. That fella sometimes thinks she loves him more than her own daughter, to that the daughter laughs and says "Impossible, but nice try!" And let's not forget when that first born got married, her brother also got married two weeks earlier and didn't tell anyone! Did she get mad, nope...she opened her arms and accepted that new daughter into her family!

Now when the first born decided to have a baby, and her husband was away and couldn't be home after the baby was born...did she turn her daughter and new grandson away to go be alone by themselves. No way Jose! She let that poor, scared out of her mind new mom stay with her for a whole month. Helping to teach this new mom how to actually change a diaper without freaking out. She formed a unique and incredibly special bond with that new baby boy, creating an everlasting friendship between the two of them.

I could go on and on about her. But I think you get the idea. She's a great Mom, a great woman, a super hard (and I mean hard) worker, and a great friend. Let's see this lady has been in the army and served our country, graduated from Bible College while taking care of two small kids, graduated from nursing school as an RN, put herself through school again later to get her bachelor and masters degree's. I have a feeling she just likes learning! Ha Ha. She is seriously one smart cookie though, that is no lie! You can ask her anything and she probably knows the answer. That's why we send the boys to her when they have a question we don't know the answer to, sure we could google it...but come on Grandma tells it better. In case I forgot to mention she's generous, always willing to help someone. I'm so thankful that God blessed us with my Mom, life wouldn't be the same (well obviously I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for her), but I mean truly I would feel a huge gaping hole in my heart if she wasn't in my life. She's my best friend, my mentor, and most importantly my Momma!

Happy Birthday Mom!

We love you so much. You mean the world to us, and I know we tell you this a lot...but we would be absolutely lost without you. I'm so thankful each and everyday that God continues to let you play such a huge role in our lives...teaching us, loving us, and just being our friend. Your the best Grandma around, and I have two very handsome little boys that can attest to that! I hope your day is filled with God's love and that he brings you incredible blessings this year...in each and every area of your life that you need it!

Since I'm in the midst of redoing our son Corbyn's bedroom, which has taken a slight curve ball since I've decided the boys should share a room so Momma can have a craft room/office. Valentines Day Mantle

I knew I needed to do something with my mantle for Valentines Day.

Especially now that Christmas is over and my mantle has been sitting empty for a month now. I just can't bring myself to put the same decor that was there before Christmas and I'm drawing a blank on a new idea for right now. So this Valentines Day decor solves that problem for at least a couple weeks. Then I'm back to figuring out what to do with the mantle again. Do you ever feel like you want to just start all over with everything in your house? Cause I do! Although I can't, so I will have to make what I have work. Anyways...back to Valentines Day mantle.

I decided to just do simple since I didn't want to buy a lot of new things for this holiday. I have had a couple extra square canvas's on hand that I was planning on finishing a painting collage in Kaison's room, but now that him and big bro will share a room I didn't have to "save" them. I thought it would be cute to paint a King & Queen of Hearts on them. Something different, and they are black and white so I can re-use them maybe in my craft room when I start that project. I think they turned out pretty good. Nothing fancy, not perfect...but they fit the bill. I used a bunch of things I already had. The tin tile square, the vases, mercury glass candle holders, and paper pinwheels (left over from a baby shower & Christmas). The only thing new I bought was the little "love" sign, and the wood heart I grabbed at Goodwill. I added some paper heart doilies on some twine to add some white against my dark fireplace. I think the mantle looks sweet and serves it's purpose for the next couple weeks.

I'm so excited that it's the weekend (it feels like it's been a long week).

If your new to The Crafted Sparrow every weekend I feature some of my favorite parties that I've seen over the past week. There are so many ideas and let's face it...I love planning a party!

Infact I'm about 2 months away from my son's 8th birthday and this year he has chosen a ninja/karate party. Which wasn't what I wanted him to pick, why you ask? Well I had made lots of penant garland from our son Kaison's 3rd birthday this past September that was a Circus Theme Party. I still have more triangles I could sew to make more too, so I wanted to be able to use them again since they took a while to make. I was thinking a vintage superhero party or candyland, neither of which he was sold on. What?!? No to a party full of candy? Crazy kid. So now he's gone with the whole karate theme, which I'm already compiling ideas for and bought some things...it should be great. I guess my garland will have to wait until the next party. Maybe Kaison will have a vintage superhero theme for his 4th.

Valentines Day Wreath

I decided I'd better buckle down and put up some Valentines Day stuff around here since it's only a couple weeks away. Although I didn't want to spend any money on making a wreath since it will only be up for a few weeks. So I didn't. I made this one for.....FREE! A box + left over fleece from my "X & O" pillows + a glue gun = One sweet wreath!

Here's what I did.

Step 1. Find cardboard box in garage

Step 2. Remove everything from that box that was destined for goodwill

Step 3. Nicely put those removed items in a pile for your husband to now deal with

Step 4. Draw a heart shape on your cardboard box & cut it out

Step 5. Make felt flowers, seen HERE

Step 6. Paint cardboard to match flowers

Step 7. Glue flowers to cardboard, be sure to fill in all the spots

Step 8. Glue on some ribbon to make a hanger for it

Step 9. Hang wreath

Step 10. Step back & enjoy it

It's time to think "Outside the BOX"!

This Valentines Day why not do something different and avoid buying those generic boxed cards? Don't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with purchasing them, so if that's your tradition by all means buy on! I think it's so much fun to use your imagination to come up with a clever Valentine that your kids will be super proud of helping you make! There are so many awesome ideas around blogland. Last year for Corbyn's class we made Asian twist to his Valentine. I made a printable card for his classmates, and we took fortune cookies and chocolate dipped them and added sprinkles. Having the hubby working for Pei Wei comes in handy, buying fortune cookies in bulk is awesome! And the kids loved them!

Let's face it...the majority of us are Mommies & Daddies and don't go out to Valentines Day parties anymore. If you do still do fun stuff like that, let me just say I'm JEALOUS! For those of us who don't get to...that doesn't mean we still can't have a really cute party at home for our families, or favorite play group. I thought today we would start gathering some amazing ideas to celebrate the day of LOVE. Valentines Day Faux Pearl Baby Onesie + Tutorial

A while back I did a tutorial on making a faux pearl baby onesie seen HERE.

I thought I should do another tutorial for Valentines Day. It's the perfect little touch for any little girls onesie or t-shirt. And if you pair it with a tutu or pettiskirt and she'll be a huge hit!

When I decided to do a new tutorial I enlisted my awesome friend Rhiannon from Raw Canvas Photography. Not only to let me borrow her adorable daughter to model, but to snap some great pictures of her daughter wearing the onesies. It all turned out so wonderful.

I also made all the hair pieces. I love how each one of them turned out.

I think this red, gray, & black one is my favorite because I love the feathers I put with it. Although the pink felt ball one reminds me of a cupcake's frosting, and who doesn't love a cupcake!

I want to give a huge thank you to my sweet friend Rhi for her help taking such lovely pictures, and for letting me try all this stuff on her sweet daughter.

If you want to make your own faux pearl onesie

or t-shirt this is what you will need:

* A t-shirt or onesie

* Puff paint in your choice of color to

coordinate with your shirt

* A fabric rosette

* Optional - clothing snaps or velcro

* A piece of cardboard

Before you start putting paint on the shirt you may want to "map" out where your going to place your strands of faux pearls. I used a white colored pencil to lightly draw the strands out ahead of time just to be sure I was doing each strand straight and as even as possible. When everything is dry and set, I then just took a damp cloth and wiped the white lines that were still showing off.

Start by placing a small piece of cardboard or a small cutting board in between the layers of your shirt or onesie. This will create a firm surface to paint on and prevents any bleeding.

Can you see my lines?

Also, if your doing a onesie..I find it helpful to tape the little shoulder flaps back onto my work surface so they don't get in the way. Draw as many strands of faux pearls as you want, there isn't a set amount.

I like to do graduating strands that go from small to large beads. But you can do anything you want. Make them all small, or big...or alternate.

Just keep going until your done.

Once your done with your strands of beads or pearls you will need to let it sit and dry it a safe place for 24 hours. While it's drying make your rosettes. Make them as large as you want, and use whatever style your comfortable making. I added a little flair to the white one I made by adding a little ruffle behind it just to spice it up a bit {or rather was it to hide where I accidentally put my finger in the wet paint!} Just be sure to add felt to the back of your rosette for a smooth backing. I have sewn the rosettes on before, but this time I thought for washing purposes I would do something different. I bought large sew-on snaps thinking it would be fun to switch out the rosettes periodically. You can sew on some velcro if you want, I didn't because I know it gets worn with washing. At this point hot glue one side of the snap to your rosette back really well. Sew the other side of the snap to your t-shirt or onesie in the spot where you want your rosette to be. I did notice that it is probably better when gluing the snap to the back of the rosette to place it not in the center if you think your rosette will be too top heavy, you can glue it more towards an outer edge so it hangs right. Or add two snaps one on top and bottom of the rosette. Feel free to sew your rosette directly to your shirt if you want!

X's & O's

I wanted to make a quick project that could put us in the Valentines Day mood around here. I'm not usually big on decorating for this holiday, but I thought I'd try a few things this year. So I decided to make some quick X & O pillows for my oldest son's bed. I chose colors that matched his room and got to work.

First I bought some red & gray fleece from Hobby Lobby.

I chose fleece since it doesn't fray.

(P.S. Won't it be nice someday when I don't have yellow'ish countertops!)

I then just free handed an "X" and an "O" on the fleece. I used a light colored sharpie.

(word to the wise...unless you want skinny letters make your letters wider than I did, ooops!)

Then I just simply flipped the pieces to match so you couldn't see my sharpie marks.

Basically it boiled down to laziness and me not wanting to make a stencil to trace for each letter. Moving on....at this point I just did a straight stitch all the way around each letter. I stitched about 1/2" in. I left a 3" opening on each letter on the outside seam so I could stuff the letters.

I then took some polyfill and stuffed them until both letters were firm. You can use a chopstick or something if you are having trouble stuffing your letters because you accidentally also made yours too thin! Ha Ha. Then once they are full sew the rest of the pillow closed, probably by hand. I took my scissors and just fringed the edges. I was originally going to use some pinking shears to cut the edges but that would have been smart to do pre-sewing them!

And then you have just some cute little "X" and "O" hugs & kisses pillows.

Corbyn came home from school and really liked seeing them on his bed. I think it made him feel special since brother didn't have them on his! Granted it took all of 3 minutes before they both had them and were using them as toys! Oh well it made them happy!

The 36th Avenue

Loose Change

So previously on Pinterest I've seen a few projects people had posted using change like penny's and nickels to tile their floors, or their countertops. It's a really cool look. Can't say I could live with it daily, well unless I lived in a really industrial type space like a loft or something then I would say yes to it. I have a friend who was thinking of doing it and since has decided to go the concrete route. She still wanted to do copper in her kitchen, so she knew she wanted penny's somewhere. My friend and her husband just bought their first house this past October, so I decided to make her a house warming gift. We had seen someone covering wood letters in penny's at a crafting event. She was sold. So that's what I made for her. I covered 3 paper mache letters in penny's "EAT".

Here's what I did:
{materials}

- Paper mache letters

- Penny's

- Weldbond glue or your choice of glue

- Copper acrylic paint

- Paint brush

- Clear spray sealer

{Warning! These tutorial pictures are terrible, this was several months ago BEFORE I got my new camera! I'm getting better I promise!}

Start by painting your paper mache letters copper! I did two layers and that was enough to cover the paper mache. After I painted it copper I used a gunmetal silver color with a dry brush technique to give it a bit of a patina.

Then get your glue ready! I think this glue worked pretty well. We'll see how it holds up over time. You'll also want to start picking out your "good" penny's! I picked mostly shiny, but threw a few duller ones into the mix. That creates character!

Then I layed out the penny's on each letter ahead of time. That way I new exactly what pattern, and placement they were going to be in. I put most face up, but did some face down too. Then you just glue until your hearts content. When you've got them all glued on and they are all dry (let it sit for at least 24 hrs) you can spray them with a clear satin or glossy spray paint. I did it to protect the penny's and the copper paint on the paper mache.

This is how they turned out, these are actually hanging in my friend Rhi's house and she took these lovely pictures of them for me. She loved how they turned out. I love how they turned out. Maybe next time I will do nickels!

I must be the only person in my group of friends

who DOES NOT own a pair of TOMS Shoes!

I know! Don't judge me! Honestly I usually just wear flip flops...almost always. I adore the look of TOMS don't get me wrong, but I can't bring myself to spend that much on shoes. Although I'm seriously considering it's cheaper counterpart BOBS.

I thought it would be fun to show some really great TOMS shoe makeovers I've seen on Pinterest lately. It ranges from original artwork on them, to taking a worn out pair and giving them new life. I hope you get some great ideas for what to do with your worn out pair, or even spicing up your brand new pair!

Black Bean & Corn Salsa

Every time I've made this Black Bean & Corn Salsa I've gotten rave reviews. And it's really easy to make and tastes awesome. It's served best with tortilla chips obviously, but the new Artisan Roasted Garlic & Black Bean tortilla chips that are available by Tostito's are super good and I think would compliment it well.

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Black Bean & Corn Salsa

Ingredients:

- 1 Can Black Beans (drained most of the way, don't rinse)

- 1 Can Corn Kernels (drained)

- 1/2 Cup Finely Diced Red Bell Pepper

- 1/2 Cup Finely Diced Yellow Bell Pepper

- 1/2 Cup Cilantro Finely Diced

- 6 to 8 Green Scallions Finely Diced

- 1 Tomato Finely Diced

- 3 Tbs. Balsamic Vinegar
- 3 Tbs. Lime Juice
- 1 Tsp. Cumin

- 1/2 Tsp. Salt & 1/4 Tsp. Pepper

- 1/2 Tsp. Garlic Powder

Directions:

Start by taking 1/2 can of the black beans, and about 1/4 cup of the corn and either mashed them very well, or put in a small food processor and blend them up good. {It looks gross I know! But you have to do it trust me!}

Add that to the rest of the black beans and corn in a mixing bowl. Add your bell peppers, scallions, cilantro, and tomato's to the bowl.

Add your vinegar and lime juice. Lastly add all the dry seasonings. Stir it all up well, and your ready to eat it!

Feel free to add a jalapeno finely diced to the mix if you like a spicy dip. I usually don't make it spicy, but it would be just as good with a spicy kick I'm sure. This is a great party dip since it doesn't need refrigeration. Hope you all like it!

White Chicken Enchiladas

I made these super yummy White Chicken Enchiladas Sunday for lunch after church. It was so easy and super tasty. I found the original recipe HERE at Joyful Momma's Kitchen. We love enchiladas in this house, that could have something to do with my better half being of Latin decent. Well that and I LOVE Cheese, and that's the best part of Enchilada's right?!

These turned out great, although I think next time I would add more green chili's to spice it up some more. And I used a rotisserie chicken from the grocery store and just pulled it apart, it was a quick fix for me. I think I will also add dice Green Scallions next time on top to give it a mild onion flavor and a pop of color. Even the hubby liked these which I didn't think he would since they weren't what he is used to. But served along side a salad it was a good Sunday lunch. When we normally make enchiladas we make a few different kinds, sometimes it's just cheese and onion, other times we do mashed potatoes and cheese, mostly we make chicken - cheese - and onion. And I almost always mix red & green sauce together with them. Do you have a favorite enchilada recipe? Feel free to share it below in a comment.

Chicken enchiladas with green chili sour cream sauce

Ingredients:

* 10 soft taco shells

* 2 cups cooked, shredded chicken

* 2 cups shredded Monterey Jack cheese

* 3 Tbsp. butter

* 3 Tbsp. flour

* 2 cups chicken broth

* 1 cup sour cream

* 1 (4 oz) can diced green chillies

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease a 9x13 pan

2. Mix chicken and 1 cup cheese. Roll up in tortillas and place in pan.

3. In a sauce pan, melt butter, stir in flour and cook 1 minute. Add broth and whisk until smooth. Heat over medium heat until thick and bubbly.

4. Stir in sour cream and chilies. Do not bring to boil, you don't want curdled sour cream.

5. Pour over enchiladas and top with remaining cheese.

6. Bake 22 min and then under high broil for 3 min to brown the cheese.

DIY Skateboard Shelves

Well Corbyn's new room reveal will be coming soon. That is if I get off my booty and get the final touches done! Ha. That's my goal over the next couple weeks. I'm still searching for fun accessories to add to the room. Corbyn decided about 6 months ago he wanted a new room, he's had a beach theme since birth. I quickly agreed. He even helped to purchase some of his new bedding as a contribution to the change. The room is more of modge podge of cool things now...skateboards, skulls, rock n' roll, guitars, fun quirky accessories, etc... The full room reveal with come later, but I wanted to show you his awesome new skateboard shelves. I've had this idea for years and wanted to do it, and I'm so glad I finally am able to use it in his room.

I looked everywhere for inexpensive, and by inexpensive I really mean CHEAP skateboards. I didn't want to spend a ton of money on his room change so as always I hunted for a bargain. I originally found $9 skateboards at Target, but they only came in lime green & orange with a maple wood colored board. Which was fine, but the green wasn't going to be used in his room and I wanted the two shelves to be different colors. I finally searched Walmart.com and found OP brand skateboards for $10 each in great colors. Corbyn's new room is grey & black, with red & aqua accents. So I lucked out and found a blue skateboard, and a red'ish one (it's really almost bordering pink, but it still looks good). The furniture in his room is maple colored so the boards echo that. I had purchased some plastic black L-Brackets from IKEA several months ago with this project in mind. I decided to paint them the same color as the wall so they blended in better and didn't stand out too much. They were only $0.50 each.

Start by measuring how far apart your L-Brackets need to be when hung. Then anchor them and attach them to the wall. Make sure they are level! I then just sat my boards on top of them. My brackets are actually a snug fit and won't move unless someone takes them off. I will eventually have the hubby screw the boards to the top side of the L-Brackets. He wasn't home when I hung the shelves. You will need shorter screws to attatch the board to the L-Bracket so you don't go through the top of the board. And it's that easy, your done! I still need to go back and take some of the wall paint I used to paint the brackets and touch up the screws so they blend as well. And when I finish finding all the fun stuff to put on them it will be awesome. They are really fun shelves and Corbyn loves them.

But seriously check out this first one, High Tea on the Beach...it's amazing! I love the soft pinks on the beach, with the black and white.
